The White Pass and Yukon Railroad is the most popular shore excursion in Alaska.
This is definitely not a "touristy attraction". A ride on the White
Pass is a ride into history. And what an interesting ride it is. In
addition to history it has outrageously beautiful scenery,
and offers a bit of a thrill as it runs along its 18 inch wide roadbed. Additionally,
The WP&YR climbs almost 3000 feet in just 20 miles and features steep
grades of up to3.9%, cliff-hanging turns of 16 degrees, two tunnels and numerous
bridges and trestles. The goldseekers going to the Klondike were looking for the fabled "gold just lying there in the streets". The reality was very different. The biggest problem was just getting to the Klondike. Skagway was/is the closest port and it is seperated from the Yukon by steep nearly impenetrable mountains. But adversity lead to creativity. The building of the WP&R was truly an international project. A combination of British financing, American engineering and Canadian contracting led to the building in just twenty-six months of what has now been designated a International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, ( a designation shared with the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty). |
For over eighty years the WP&YR served the mining industry in the Yukon.
Since 1988 it has operated during the summer visitors season, showing visitors
the beauty of this spectacular area. Today a combination of day-trippers,
passengers between Skagway and Whitehorse Yukon territory and hikers
who have completed the Chilkoot trail hop aboard the White Pass. |
The WP&YR offers five different trips. The White Pass Summit Excursion is a 3 to 3.5 hour, twenty mile round trip offered Monday - Saturday at 8:15 and 12:15, with a 4:30 trip available on Tuesday and Wednesday. This trip is wheelchair accessible. The Yukon Adventure is a 67.5 mile six hour one way trip to Carcross Yukon Territory. Lunch is included at WP&R' restored station at Lake Bennett. The abandoned town of Bennett was an important way station on the route to the Klondike. It was here that prospectors, having traversed the White Pass with the required one ton of goods, stopped to build or purcase boats to float down the mighty Yukon River to the Gold fields at Dawson City Yukon. The northbound train from leaves Skagway at 7:45 AM, arrriving at Carcross at 2:00 PM. The southbound train leaves Carcross at 10:30 AM arriving in Skagway at 4:30. Wheelchair access not a available. Passport required. Rail/Motor Coach Service combines a one-way train excursios with a motorcoach for extended service along the Klondike Highway. Motorcoach connections are available at Rail Stations in Skagway, Alaska - Fraser, British Columbia - Carcross, Yukon -Whitehorse, Yukon. Wheelchair access not a available. Passport required. Hikers Service provides rail pick up and delivery for those who would like to hike the Denver or Laughton Glacier or the world famous Chilkoot trail. . |
Perfect for the train aficionado, the
Fraser Meadow Steam Excursion, is available on Friday and Monday only. Travel with one of WPY&R's steam locomotives, Engine No. 73 or Engine No. 69, six miles beyond the White Pass Summit to Fraser Meadows. This excursion takes four hours to travel fifty-two miles round trip. Wheelchair access not a available. Passport required. |
