Seward Alaska, at the head of Resurrection Bay,
is the charming beginning of the South Central Alaska transportation system.
As the southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad it serves as the base of the Alaska "Railbelt", the major population area of the
state. The spectacular ride on the Coastal Classic between Seward and Anchorage offers views of magnificent walls of ice, jagged peaks and gorges and fast flowing
rivers teeming with salmon For many, Seward is the beginning fo a journey to Anchorage, Denali Park or on to Fairbanks and Arctic Alaska. The Seward Highway is both a National Scenic Byway, and an All-America Road . Along this route you'll have views of surging tides and the still waters of a fjord; you may see salmon chasing up a stream, Dall sheep, moose and beautiful flower-kissed alpine meadows. But there's much more to Seward than leaving it. Seward is called the "Gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park". Struck by the beauty of the area, President Warren Harding, visiting Seward in 1923, named the entrance to Resurrection Bay after himself--"The Harding Gateway to Resurrection Bay". Less than a month later he was dead. The name never took, but his appreciation was right on. |

Just outside Seward is mile zero of the Iditarod Trail. This trail was a major starting point for prospectors seeking gold in interior Alaska. A portion of it was the route of the famous dog sled relay bringing life saving Diptheria vaccine to Nome. This race is commemorated today with the world famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Seward is the home of the 2004 race winner Mitch Seavey, whose family includes five Iditarod veterans. You can expereince either ground level wheeled sled dog mushing or helicopter icefeild dog mushing in Seward Another attraction worth noting is the Alaska SeaLife Center. More than just an aquarium, the SeaLife Center will introduce you to the fish, sea mammals and avian inhabitants of coastal Alaska in an environment that simulates their natural habitat. Cruising Kenai Fjords, kayaking Resurrection Bay, experiencing dog-sledding, visiting the Sea-Life Center or just traveling around town on the trolley, there's much to do in Seward.
